Health, or the lack of it, is one of the key issues that affects all societies. The history of Chewton Mendip has been affected by various forms of illness, both mental and physical. Health care was closely linked religion for a large part of history.

The Black Death that first appeared in England in 1348 killed between one third and two thirds and had a greater effect on society than most other events.

the 18th poor law records are full or records about the provision of health care and the effects of smallpox and other forms of sickness. The 1740 list of the Waldegrave tenants also show the impact of the various epidemics.The Hippisley and Kingsmill  and other families were affected by mental illness

The mines took their toll and many servicemen died of illness, not the effects of battle.
