Nicholas’ Cottage

The 18th century churchwarden accounts and poor-law records refer to a Richard Nicholas who may have died in 1740. The map  for that year shows his cottage was near the church and Batch Cottage and was one of the cottages on Lower Street  in the Town tithing owned by the Waldegrave. It was shown in the 1794 map.
George Dudden probably took over the cottage when Richard Nicholas died or was taken into some form of care. George Dudden was married to Betty who may have been a Thatcher by birth because John Thatcher was described as George Dudden’s nephew. John Thatcher may have later taken on What was later called Thatcher’s Cottage.
The plot was given the number 539 in 1839 and it may have been the same building which was demolished and replaced by modern houses.
