East Harptree

East Harptree 001This is a picture of East Harptree with an unknown man standing in the road in front of the clock. It was purchased by Pat Hellard in a postcard sale in Cheltenham who was surprised to find that it had ben sent by her grandmother to her great-aunt in Slough. Pat has kindly given permission for this photograph to be published.
There are two Harptrees, East and West. East Harptree is the closest to Chewton Mendip but was part of the Wells Forum Hundred. West Harptee was part of the Chewton Hundred despite being further away. Both Litton and East Harptree were part of the Wells Forum hundred. The main reasons are a combination of farming and mining  which is explained in the page about West Harptree.
Other anomalies of the parish boundaries is that East Harptree does share a boundary with Chewton Mendip on what was the Middlesex or West End Tithings and Widcombe
