House

The House family were involved with Chewton Mendip from the 17th century until the modern era. John House senior, gent. was buried in Chewton Mendip on 14/7/1639.

They  are listed in the 18th century churchwardens accounts and  poor book paying rates for estate in most of the tithings.There are several fields marked as ‘House’ in the 1794 map. One is near Bathway cross roads next to what is now called Bathway Farm so it is assumed the House family were tenants. A Samuel House was paying the rates until c 1730 when other people were mentioned.  The House estate may have been a Kingsmill property in the 1750s.
