Purnell’s Lane

Purnell’s Lane is feature in the landscape between Rowdens Lane and Mannings Lane which are all in the  East End of Chewton Mendip near Lower East End Farm,  Hippisley , East End farms and what has been called Honewell Farm in this website. All three lanes used to connect the East End Tithing to Shooters Bottom.
The outline of the lane is  shown in the 1740 and 1794 but it is not shown in the 1640 map but it may have been called Fields Lane in that map. The lane was named Purnells in the  1800 map.
The 18th century churchwarden or poor book and 1766 ledgers make several references to ‘Purnell’s‘ but some of these refer to properties in other parts of the village. The Purnell family probably gave their name  Purnell’s Parks.
