Ford House

Ford HouseThis is Ford House in  Lower Street on the Litton Road. It is believed that this is where Herbert Le Patourel lived. He won a posthumous Victoria Cross in WW2 but lived and retired to Chewton Mendip. The Prior family lived there earlier.
The  1794 map  shows a blank space marked ‘Kingsmill‘ but that map only recorded the Hippisley and Waldegrave properties so the blank space does not mean there was no building at that date. However,  the 1839 map also shows an empty field so it may have formed part of Dowlings Farm. The slate roof also suggests that it was built after 1839. It is not to be confused with Ford House Farm.
