1640 Map

Somerset archive record DD\WG/MAP/3 is a map of the Mendip Forest which starched from Chewton Mendip,  Priddy , Green Ore and Shooters Bottom. The online catalogue describes the map as undated but gives an estimated date of 1640. Other records suggest a date of 1700. The inclusion of  Egelfelde House  suggests the earlier date because there is no reference to that property in the 1696 list of Waldegrave  tenants.
This map identifies several lead mining areas and other mines that were in operation in the area. The Waldegraves were on of the Lords of Mendip who were responsible for the overseeing the mining laws and they may have commissioned this map.
The map covers approximately the same area as the 1800 map which identified the responsibility for paying agistment tithe  after the land was enclosed.
