Bechamps

The poor law records make reference to an estate called ‘Bechamps‘ in the West End tithing of Chewton Mendip. This may be a corruption of the Beauchamp name but the Beaumont  is another possibility.  The Yorks and other families were recorded as paying poor rates for this estate but it has not yet been identified on the 1794 map. The Yorks were responsible for a number of properties so they may not be helpful in identifying where the Bechamps estate was but the more unusually named Mr Cramphoine was also a tenant.
