White House (Clouds)

CloudsA White House can just bee seen in the distance which gives the property its modern name but this picture helps to explain one reason why the farm that occupied the site was called Clouds. It is  in West End close to Burges’ Coombe  and Ivy Cottage. The picture was taken from Adams Corner.
White House The picture on the right shows the house in greater detail. This may be the building that is shown in the old maps which has been modernised. It is now a private house but it was previously a tied cottage where the Cook family lived when ‘Red’ Cook worked at Eakers Hill farm
White HouseThis extract from the 1794 map shows there were two buildings on the site. The house shown above was probably the lower one of the two shown on the map.
The 18th century churchwarden accounts or the poor-law show the Coles family were occupying Coles and Clouds. The 1840 map shows it as two cottages occupied by George Ford and Charles Harris.
