history follows a time line  and people are involved in most events but history can also be divided into themes or topics. The two main topics are people and places but a list of the top ten topics are listed below.

Business. Industries like farming and mining dominated the history of the village since earliest times but commercial activity of other kinds has also formed part of village life.Return to the top of the list.

Education. Learning knowledge and skills takes many forms but Chewton Mendip is fortunate to still have a school.Return to the top of the list.

Farming. Agriculture and related activities  has formed a major role in the History of Chewton Mendip. Farming is still a significant  influence but the number of people involved is far less.Return to the top of the list.

Government. Chewton Mendip is now just another village but it used to be a centre of local government called a ‘hundred’. It also used to have its own policeman based in the village. Return to the top of the list.

Military. One of the functions of a Hundred was to organise fighting men. The last military action within the parish boundary occurred in the Civil War period of 1642-1651. People with links to the village have been involved with conflicts ever since.Return to the top of the list.

Mining. Mining for minerals such as lead, coal and calamine started before records began and was a major employer until living memory. The associated industry of quarrying is still active nearby. Return to the top of the list.
