Moon

The Moon family make a brief appearance in the records of Chewton Mendip mainly in the churchwarden accounts and poor book in the middle of the 18th century. These records refer to Jonas Moon who was responsible for an estate  in Widcombe.

One record states Jonas Moon was responsible for the Sherborne, or Sherburne, estate in 1730 and other records link the Sherbone and Holcombe estates which provides a possible clue to the source of the name of the estate. The Moon family were fairly numerous in the Harptrees but they were also well represented in Holcombe village.
