Hewish

The Hewish or Huish is one of the families  with a long relationship with Chewton Mendip. Mary, the  daughter of Caleb Huish was christened in Chewton Mendip on 3rd  June 1623. A Kalib Hewish is listed in Dwelly’s Hearth Tax exemptions for 1674 and he is unlikely to have been the father of Mary due to the time delay but there probably was a close relationship between Caleb Huish of 1623 and Kelib Hewish of 1794. The two variations of spelling the family name continued to be used interchangeably until the modern era.
Members of the family are listed in the poor book starting in 1730 but no record of them has so far been identified in the churchwardens accounts.
Austen Hewish was in the cricket eleven of 1904. Joseph Hewish was one of the returning heroes from World War One. John Hewish as a member of the Church Choir in 1938
