Pound Close
Pound Close was sometimes listed as a separate estate in the churchwarden and poor book of the 18th century but it is believed to have been a small field next to the church. The estate may have been the filed and buildings marked 710 in the 1794 map which is now called Batch Cottage. |
The Hunts were the tenants recorded as rate payers and this family known to have been the Kingsmills estate agents but they also appear to have been tenants of the Waldegraves. It is known the Hunts occupied several properties which may explain why Pound Close which is known to have been in the Town tithing was sometimes reported with Middlesex properties. It may have been one of the properties sold in 1785. Batch Cottage/Pound Close is a possible site for a Parsonage Farm or Vicarage house in the early history of the village. |
