Hobhouse Map

The Hobhouse map is a schematic view of the Mendips showing the villages on and around it. It is believed it was based on a map of the Mendip Forest created in the Medieval era when the  Bonvilles  were one of the Lords Royal of the Mendip who controlled the mines.  A copy of the map is shown in the page about the lead mines
The version used in this website  is a copy of a map held by the Waldegraves and all copies contain some of the inaccuracies of the original so the Bowen and the 1794 maps are used where necessary.
Priddy is roughly in the centre and the other villages are drawn in an ellipse around the four mining areas which provides a reasonably sensible conceptual view of the area but Green Ore is in completely the wrong place.
