Hobhouse Map
The Hobhouse map is a schematic view of the Mendips showing the villages on and around it. It is believed it was based on a map of the Mendip Forest created in the Medieval era when the Bonvilles were one of the Lords Royal of the Mendip who controlled the mines. A copy of the map is shown in the page about the lead mines |
The version used in this website is a copy of a map held by the Waldegraves and all copies contain some of the inaccuracies of the original so the Bowen and the 1794 maps are used where necessary. |
Priddy is roughly in the centre and the other villages are drawn in an ellipse around the four mining areas which provides a reasonably sensible conceptual view of the area but Green Ore is in completely the wrong place. |
